Guidelines for the 5+1 internship program released

08 Sep 2025

The Psychology Board of Australia has updated the guidelines for the 5+1 internship program, following extensive consultation over the past several months.

An advance copy of the updated guidelines is out now, before they come into effect on 1 December 2025 at the same time as the updated professional competencies and new Code of conduct for psychologists.

All provisional psychologists (and their supervisors) completing the 5+1 internship from this date onwards will need to comply with the updated guidelines.

For Provisional psychologists completing the 5+1 internship and eligible to apply for General Registration before December 2025, an exemption has been put in place which means you do not need to submit case studies to Ahpra. As the case study requirement has been removed from the updated Guidelines, we have removed this requirement immediately for all 5+1 provisional psychologists.

Thank you to those who participated in our consultation process for your interest in the review of our 5+1 internship guidelines.
